This coming Sunday (10/14) in Wheeler Park, a fantastic location in downtown Oklahoma City by the river bike trails, is a cyclocross race for everyone – The Physician’s Optical River Cross hosted by VillainCX. Working with http://Oklahoma.CX we have a first timers race (or beginners) for anyone who is just starting in cyclocross and wanting to see what the experience is like! All you need is a bike, a helmet and a sense of fun and adventure to join us on Sunday. The beginner race costs are covered, you just need to fill out some info for race details and you are good to go!
We also have a kids race – which is free for kids to participate in. All kids need, again, is a helmet and bike and they can come out and test their skills on the course we’ve setup.
All levels of riders, men and women will be competing throughout the day – with the Pro / Elite level men racing right in the middle of everyone – just after the kids race. If you want to see who the strongest cyclists are in Oklahoma City as they race at their limit then this is something you don’t want to miss. The Pros start at 1:00pm.
If you’ve never been to a Cyclocross race you are missing out! Half sporting event, half festival is a fantastic spectator sport to watch a biking event, cheer others on and have a great time. The River Cross will be going on all Sunday afternoon, so there is plenty of time to check it out.
If you are asking, “I wonder if cyclocross is for me?” here are a couple suggestions:
Cyclocross, fitness wise, is a short effort similar a short time trial – just off road. Races only last 30–60 minutes so they are intense efforts, but short lived across a technical course that mixes it up. So, if you’ve trained and done TRIATHLON’s you already have fitness and would find the effort similar to a sprint tri event. If you’ve done MOUNTAIN BIKING then you are very familiar with the technical skills needed. If you’ve don’t ROAD BIKING, especially a criterium, then a cyclocross event will feel very similar to you.
For fall, winter Cyclocross is perfect cross training and a way to mix things up. Come on out to our practice races, and to the Physician’s Optical River Cross and experience something new!
